In 1877, Sale Baptist church was first created, with a community of people committing to meet weekly at a site on Ashton Lane in Sale. In the 1950’s the church caught a vision to expand and decided to invest in a new building. In 1963 they moved into the King's Centre, built right between Sale and Altrincham on the corner of Raglan Road and Washway Road. Next door to the King's Centre there was a community centre owned and run by Trafford Council. The following 30 years saw the church thriving and the community centre being used by host of local charities and community groups.
In the late 1980’s, Sale Baptist renamed to South Manchester Christian Fellowship (SMCF) and appointed a dynamic new leader – Martin Dunkley. Martin cast a vision for a new facility – one where the church could meet and continue its tradition of growth and service to the surrounding area.
The church community began fundraising. In 2003, Andy Barclay-Watt took over leadership of the church and determined to pursue the vision. He and the leadership team of the time comprising 8 couples made the collective decision to inject fresh momentum by sacrificially pledging £144,000 of their own money to the project.
The next ten years saw a huge amount of sacrificial giving from all parts of the church family to the tune of around £1million of privately donated funds. Gifts from £10 to £50,000 were all pooled with a vision to create a facility that would serve the church and that the entire community could benefit from. A number of grant-making bodies with a heart for making an impact locally also made generous donations. For the project to come to fruition, local partnerships were key. In 2009 Trafford Council (the landowners) agreed to fully support the plans for one new facility to replace the existing community centre and the church building. That same year, the church decided to rename as LifeChurch Manchester. In 2010 discussions with another local fellowship – King’s Way Church – led to a partnership where both congregations would share one space, both with a heart to love and serve their local communities. These were the breakthroughs the project needed to get properly underway.
In Mid 2011 – during one of the harshest recessions of living memory – the trustees of LifeChurch Manchester made a decision based on faith and a passion for making a difference in South Manchester. Their commitment was to invest more than £3.5million to create a place fulfilling more than 20 years of planning and prayer. In Sept 2011 demolition began. In Feb 2013 – The LifeCentre opened to the public. LifeCentre Events Ltd. operates as a not-for-profit social enterprise. It's mission statement is… to be the stand-out community hub and conference venue for South Manchester, by faithfully serving the vision of LifeChurch Manchester and providing all our guests, community groups and corporate clients with a consistently extravagant degree of hospitality and service.
